IELTS Requirements for Malaysian Universities: Do Bangladeshi Students Need IELTS?

If you are planning to study in Malaysia, one of the first questions is whether you need IELTS. The honest answer is: it depends on the university, the course and your level of study. Many Malaysian universities ask for an English test, but several accept other proof, and some let you start without a score and test you after you arrive.
Typical IELTS scores for Malaysian universities
Every university sets its own minimum, so always check the exact course page. As a general guide, these are the scores most universities ask for:
| Level | Typical IELTS requirement |
|---|---|
| Foundation and diploma | Often a lower score, or none at entry. Many universities test your English on arrival or place you in an English course. |
| Bachelor's degree | Around IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 |
| Master's degree | Around IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 |
| PhD | Set by the university and the faculty. Often similar to or higher than a Master's. |
Courses such as law, medicine and some health programmes can ask for a higher score than the general guide.
What if you do not have IELTS?
You still have options. Depending on the university, you may be able to use one of these:
- Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate. Some universities accept an MOI certificate from your previous school or university if your studies were taught in English. Not every university accepts it, and some only for certain levels.
- Another English test. TOEFL, Pearson PTE and some other tests are accepted by many universities in place of IELTS.
- The university's own English test. Some universities test you after you apply, and place you in the right English class based on the result.
- An English or foundation programme first. If your English is not yet strong enough, you can start with a pathway or foundation programme and move on to your degree when you reach the required level.
Does your IELTS score affect your scholarship?
It can help. Many private universities offer tuition discounts or bursaries based mainly on your SSC, HSC or degree result, and a strong English score can support your application. See which universities and courses currently offer a discount on our page about studying in Malaysia from Bangladesh with a scholarship.
How to prepare
- Choose your course and university first, then check its exact English requirement.
- If IELTS is needed, book your test early. Results take time and visa processing cannot start until your offer letter is ready.
- If you plan to use an MOI certificate, ask your previous school or university for it now. Some institutions take several weeks.
- Keep your SSC and HSC certificates and transcripts ready, as you will need them in any case.
The next steps after English
Once your English proof is sorted, the next steps are the offer letter and the student visa. Our guide to the Malaysia student visa from Bangladesh explains the EMGS process step by step, and the complete study in Malaysia guide covers costs, intakes and entry requirements by level.
Requirements change between universities and intakes. Always confirm the current rule with the university before you pay for a test.
